According to an article by The Guardian today, Apple will not be partaking in O2′s new scheme to rank mobile phones based on the ‘greenness’ of mobile handsets, which has launched today.

In a partnership with the Forum for the Future, the scheme gives mobile phones a ranking from 1-5 based on how environmentally friendly the raw materials of the phone are. Manufacturers have answered a questionnaire containing 63 questions, to help the scheme to score the devices.

The mobile in the top spot that takes this prestigious eco crown is the Sony Ericsson Elm with a total score of 4.3 out of 5. Seven phones made it to the number 2 spot with a score of 4 out of 5. This was made up of 3 Nokia devices, 3 Sony Ericssons and a Samsung mobile device.

Apple have declined to give reasoning behind the decision to not participate in the scheme, instead highlighting that they conduct their own online environmental reports.

According to research undertaken by O2, mobile consumers are factoring the environment into their mobile decision making, with 11.5% of people surveyed suggesting sustainability had a ‘strong influence’ on the model they would choose.
