In the first of our job app review series, I have taken to roaming the app stores to see what job seeking gems can be found. Our good friends at Thirty Three produced LV’s Job Search App, but will it stand up to our stringent testing and what do genuine job seekers think of the app?
Appearance
The app has a great feel, and it fits nicely with LV’s brand. The first screen that greets the user has a clear call to action, giving you two options; to view all vacancies or to choose jobs by location. The ‘all vacancies’ option means that in just one click you can see all available vacancies that LV has to offer, which you can then tap to reveal more details about a particular vacancy.
Features
Not hugely feature-rich, but those contained within the app work well. These include:
- Very detailed job descriptions with salary, location, closing date, plus lengthy requirements and responsibilities for each role.
- The ability to view vacancy locations on a map, then tap one of the locations to reveal available roles in the area.
- Email jobs to yourself to apply when at a computer.
- Email jobs to others.
Functionality
The app itself works very nicely. It is very easy to use, very difficult to press the wrong button or do the wrong thing. There are a decent number of jobs contained within the app to make the job seeking experience pleasant and useful, as may be the worry of a job app for one company. The app integrates nicely with the phone’s email to make emailing a vacancy simple; all you need to do is pop in your email address of choice.
Things to note
A great app for ease of use but there are just two tiny downsides for me, and they are small. The map which allows you to view vacancies via location is a nice feature, but there is a slight bit of form over function going on as the location names sometimes overlap, making it difficult to read and potentially tricky to click on certain words.
The job descriptions are fantastically detailed, giving the job seeker an excellent wealth of information to discover whether they are suitable for the role. Sometimes the description provides links for further info, and these links take you through to LV’s website. The problem inherent with visiting a web page in an app is that there is no clear way to return to the app itself. Users of iOS4, however, are able to easily return to the app using the handy double-tap feature of the iPhone 4; a product of the phone’s new multi tasking capabilities.
In the interest of making sure our reviews are as objective and relevant as they can be, I asked a current job seeker to help me with my review by answering the following questions after downloading and having a go with LV’s app:
What do you like most about the LV app?
“The app is very simple to use”
What do you like least about the LV app?
“There is no postcode search for nearest vacancies; by just looking at the map, it is not particularly clear which location would be my nearest.”
What in your opinion, is the most important feature of a job search app?
“The ability to set up job alerts. While I do conduct job searches, I like the option to having [sic] suitable jobs sent to me.”
How may stars would you give LV’s App, from 1-5 (1 being lowest)?
“I would give the app 4 stars, as it is very easy to use”
